Water Fountain Trouble Shooting

All outdoor fountains will have maintenance issues at one time or another. A regular cycle of cleaning and preventative care should reduce the number of problems you have with your outdoor fountain. But for those instances when problems do occur, here's a list of some of the more common outdoor fountain troubles and their cures.

Splashing water

Excessive splashing is one of the most common issues with outdoor fountains. There are a number of possible causes. If your fountain's splash guard is set properly, you can rule that out.

The next thing to check is your outdoor fountain's water level. Overfilling the reservoir can make things a little crowded in the pool, and water will be more likely to splash around. If that's not it, check to make sure the fountain is positioned evenly. A slanted surface can cause splashing on one side of your outdoor fountain.

Finally, if all else fails, check the pump. There is a plastic regulator in there that controls the flow of the water. Slowing the water should resolve the problem.

Noisy pump

First check to make sure the pump is fully submerged. If so, check that all connections from the pump are tight and secure. If the pump is still noisy, put a sponge underneath it to absorb its vibrations. This should at least lessen any excess noise.

Poor water flow

Poor water flow to your outdoor fountain could have several causes. Check the tubing first to make sure no kinks are blocking the water flow. Next check that the water pump is submerged and powered on and the pump output nozzle is inserted properly. Also be certain to regularly check the water level of your outdoor fountain, as too little water in the reservoir will prevent proper water flow.

If you're not getting an even flow of water across your fountain's surface, make sure its position is level. A slanted or tilted outdoor fountain will not function at its best.
