Outdoor Fountain Care

Outdoor fountains make beautiful and soothing additions to any yard or garden. But because outdoor water fountains are continually dealing with water and natural elements, a regular preventative regimen of care and cleaning is essential. Here are some tips on how to keep your outdoor fountain running at its best.

Water

Standard water can be used to fill the reservoir of your outdoor water fountain, but be sure to use a water clarifier or algae preventer to reduce buildups. Changing the water in your outdoor water fountain once a month will also reduce algae growth.

Maintaining a proper water level in your outdoor water fountain is paramount. If the water level gets too low, the submersible pump will run dry and burn out. Checking the water level every day is advisable as it will be better for your outdoor water fountain's health to add a little water every day than a lot every few days.

Cleaning

Take a clean cloth with you each time you check your outdoor fountain's water level to wipe the fountain clean of dirt and dust. Whenever you change the water, wipe down the entire fountain. A bleach, Listerine, lemon juice, or vinegar solution will fight algae buildup, though you may prefer a gentler and less acidic mix of warm water and detergent.

Cleaning your outdoor fountain's water pump is also necessary. Once a month will suffice in soft water areas, twice a month in hard water areas. To clean the pump, read the manufacturer's instructions so you understand how it's put together, then take it apart and soak it in a vinegar solution. A well cared for pump should last two or three years.

Care

The constant freezing and thawing that takes place in winter can do lasting damage to your outdoor fountain. Proper outdoor water fountain care demands proper winterization. If you can store your fountain indoors during the coldest months, you should do so. Otherwise, drain your outdoor fountain completely, put a burlap casing in the fountain bowl, and cover the fountain with a tarp or other protective material.
